I have been reading the book of Luke. Luke goes into such detail when telling the stories of Jesus. Stories with which we are all familiar.
The other day as I read the story of Jesus' arrest and betrayal the story of Peter again caught my attention. Peter was so emphatic that he would never leave Jesus that he was willing to die for him. Jesus tells him otherwise, that he will deny him, 3 times in fact, before the cock crows. Peter was warned ---he could have been on guard.
What caught me was the detail of the arrest in "Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance." Peter was already distancing himself from Christ. At a time of His greatest need, and what would turn out to be Peter's greatest need, he was distant. Before the cock crowed Peter denied knowing Jesus 3 times, just as Jesus said he would.
Are you following at a distance, keeps echoing in my mind. When we follow at a distance, rather than getting as close to Christ as we can, we are setting ourselves up for the inevitable...denial, disaster, destruction. It is the closeness to Christ that keeps us safe, that keeps us strong. Are you following at a distance? Draw close to Christ today for your strength, for your protection and your ability to fend off the attacks that you may encounter.
